The Choate Agency, LLC was established in 2004 by Mickey Choate who began his career in publishing in 1985 in the publicity and subsidiary rights department of Weidenfeld & Nicolson/Grove Press, now known as Grove/Atlantic, Inc. Born and raised in New York City, Mickey attended Vassar College where he received his BA in history in 1984. In 1990, he joined Lescher & Lescher, Ltd., a renowned literary agency founded by Robert Lescher in 1964. After serving as the foreign rights/contracts manager, he began to represent his own clients.
The Choate Agency is honored to represent, among others, New York Times Bestselling novelists John Hart and Joe Hill; David J. Eicher, editor-in-chief of Astronomy magazine and a noted Civil War historian; journalist J. Peder Zane; Shakespeare scholar Marvin Hunt; Robin Kirk, an award-winning author and human rights activist; Colonel (ret) Douglas Macgregor; Lisa Yockelson, an award-winning food writer and contributor to The Boston Globe and The Washington Post; Tish Boyle, food editor of Pastry Art & Design; cookbook author Judith Sutton; and James Beard Award Winning Chef Michael Mina. He has also been known to work with his mother, Judith Choate, a well-known cookbook author and chef collaborator.
The Choate Agency’s interest is in strong commercial fiction and narrative non-fiction. In the areas of non-fiction we are particularly interested in history, military history, politics, current events, natural science, and food and wine. The agency does not handle genre fiction, romance, self-help, confessional memoirs, spirituality, pop psychology, religion, how-to, New Age titles, children’s books poetry, self-published works or screenplays.
